Early Literacy: Developing and Enhancing Early Language (DEEL)

As adults, writing comes easily and without much thought, for children however, writing is a whole new skill requiring time, practice and encouragement. The skill of writing begins with mark making. It is easy to dismiss the different lines and circles children create on paper as mere ‘scribbles’, but actually, children are mark making, the first step towards writing.”

The Writing’s on the Wall: Mark Making and Early Literacy

This session will look at practical activities to develop children’s early writing skills in an early years setting. Practitioners will leave the session with ideas that they can use in their own setting.

This session will explore ways of encouraging children to develop the necessary skills for early writing in a fun way. Participants will return to their settings with practical ideas to use with their children.

SEND: Watch Me Talk; Developing and Enhancing Early Language

Communication is a foundation skill for all children. This session will show how early language and communication skills can be provided for all children, but especially those with special educational needs. This practical session is an opportunity to also observe children with SEND using communication boards and low tech Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in the continuous provision.

Focused session: £30 per person

Come Talk with Me: Developing Children’s Language

How to support children with communication and language delays – a look at how the children are supported through the session and also resources that would support the children and staff.

Many young children may have early delays with communications for a variety of reasons. At Highfield Nursery School they provide support for Children’s communication and language development through a ‘Language Facilitation Group’.

This in-action session will allow you to observe the weekly sessional group which is supported by two early years’ practitioners who provide activities to a small group of children who require additional support with communication and language. Ask questions, gather strategies and amass ideas o take back to your own settings.

A ‘Practice in Action’ session offering an opportunity to think about behaviour in a different way and concentrate on the communication, rather than the behaviour.

The session will include observing interactions and relationships in the nursery, the strategies being used and the impacts on children and discussing common triggers for certain behaviours and acknowledging the feelings of the child. This workshop will include a tour of the Nursery School.
